Over the past 3-4 years Pharmanovia has become a case study in how not to run a pharma business. A series of awful acquisitions and in licensing deals has led to a weak pipeline and sales projection. This was all fuelled by an intimidating senior leadership culture where challenge was discouraged and favouritism rife. Spending increased while leverage rose to a level few of us can comprehend. The eventual response has been severe cost cutting that led to major loss of talent and organisational capability. Current strategy under the new leadership team appears to rely again on high-cost initiatives despite ongoing financial constraints, with financial media highlighting a toxic credit rating and increasing scrutiny around company finances. How was a once steady and reliable business left to fester for so long?
